The harsh winter season is finally behind us, which means it’s time to start preparing for warm weather motorcycle riding. It’s likely that you’ll be encountering several fellow riders out on the road now that the weather is favorable. As wonderful as it might be to experience this change in the seasons, it’s also important to prepare accordingly. This is even more critical when you’ll be riding a motorcycle. Dress Appropriately

As soon as you notice the temperature heating up outside, you might be tempted to start shedding layers in an effort to keep cool. However, this is not a good idea and you’ll want to resist the urge. You need protection for your limbs in the event of a fall, which means you need to be wearing long sleeves and pants for general road safety. Additionally, you’d be wise to ditch dark colors and heavy leather when it’s hot.

You’ll be in good shape if you choose light-colored, breathable fabrics such as linen and cotton. It might even be worth investing in a ventilated jacket that’ll produce more airflow and protect you from potential road hazards. You can also wear a bandana underneath your helmet to prevent sweat from getting into your eyes. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to exposed areas of skin, like the back of your neck. When you ride your motorcycle, you should wear a helmet that offers UV light protection. If this isn’t possible, you can wear sunglasses under your helmet.

Keep Hydrated

You’d be surprised at just how quickly dehydration can set in. In order to avoid this, you should be drinking plenty of water when you’re out on the road. If you opted for thicker clothing, you’re going to sweat even more when it’s hot. As a result, you’re going to require even more hydration. It’s all too easy to forget to drink water when you’re out having the time of your life on your motorcycle. Consider purchasing a hands-free hydration system that will allow you to sip as you ride.

When you sweat, you lose salt and electrolytes, which is what causes dehydration. This means you’re going to need to pack some salty snacks and sports drinks to replenish what you lost.

Ride When it’s Cool

Many of the ways that avoid worst-case scenarios come down to common sense. For example, you should try to ride when it’s cool outside. This means avoiding primetime heat, such as the middle of the afternoon. Ride early in the morning or when the sun is setting instead. This helps you avoid heat exhaustion. If you get too carried away when you’re enjoying an early morning motorcycle ride, it’ll be noontime before you know it. All of a sudden, you’re going to be feeling quite hot very quickly. Choose your riding times wisely in an effort to avoid this situation.

Take Plenty of Breaks

While we’re on the topic of getting carried away, it’s important to note that you should take plenty of breaks. Stretch your legs, spend some time in the shade, drink water, and enjoy some snacks. This also gives your motorcycle some time to cool off. It definitely doesn’t hurt to slow down and take in the beautiful scenery surrounding you.
